Progress

Hello Hello

We had a really good week this week. We put another young lady on date. Her name is Marissa. She has two young children, Almonte and Davionte. She has had issues in the past with drugs but it 10 months clean and has seen the changes in her life that have come because of attending church. She has attended foursquare church in the past but ever since we have been talking to her she has latched on to the message. She will be baptized on the 18th of February. She is moving into 2nd ward boundaries in the coming weeks (we work in 3rd ward) so she will start attending their ward next week and then she will be baptized into their ward. We hope the transition is smooth. She is black. It's cool.

Yvonne and Adriana are still doing well. We moved the date and recommitted them to the 25th of February (it was on the 11th). They need to get married and they don't think they can do it financially until the middle of February. But they are still doing well. Yvonne calls us "her angels". She asked us the other day "are you guys angels?" We said no... But she still thinks we are. She's cute.

The Hansen's are doing well too! Mark is finally making it to the point where I think he would accept the invitation to be baptized. Dawn said she would be baptized but we didn't set a date with her because Mark isn't quite ready. He's ready he just doesn't know it yet!! Or maybe he does know it and we just need to invite him. Our district meeting this week was focused a lot on inviting people to be baptized this week. Often times missionaries fall into a pattern of just teaching to teach and they shy away from inviting people to be baptized. So our Zone Leaders committed us to invite at least 2 people a week. An invitation includes using the words... "Will you follow the example of Jesus Christ by being baptized by someone holding the priesthood authority of God?" And they want us to do that more often. So we will. And this week. Because of that. We have one more person on date! Good Zone Leaders!

What else... I dunno. We have received a lot of referrals lately. That's a good think. It stopped snowing. Its all wet now.

I rolled my ankle again last p-day. That makes like 4 times so far on my mission... Sister Greer told me to take the week off from basketball... We'll see. I probably will. I hate ankles.

I ate Manuto this week. It was gross. But I would eat it again. Cow's stomach... Interesting texture. I don't recommend it unless you are dying of starvation. That's all. i think...

Oh. That guy who's brain tumor was cured through the power of the Priesthood. Mike. Did I tell you guys that he called again and told us that his lung cancer is gone too!!! Priesthood... its powerful. And I gave the blessing! Its pretty sweet. We still haven't met with him. He is recovering and doesn't want to meet yet. We will see how that goes.

I love you all.
Especially you, Aunt Julie.
And the rest of you too...

Love,

Snow

Okay. So over the past week it has snowed about a foot. maybe more. at least a foot. We have cleared Betty's driveway pretty much every day. I got boots mom! It was cool. Elder Dutson called into the mission office and told sister Bodmer that he still hadn't received his Christmas package and was wondering if it was sitting in the mission office. She said no and he cried a little bit (not really) but he also asked if there were any boots sitting around in the mission office that we could use. She said no but she called Elder Dewolf who works in Yakima and she had him buy us new boots! It was awesome. I love my new boots. They keep my feet dry and warm. There are some stretches of sidewalk that haven't been plowed, or they have been plowed onto and now are covered with snow, so having boots is stupendous.

I also got my GPS mother. Thank you. I kinda love it. I will use it forever. Thank you thank you thank you.

We put a coulple people on date this week. Yvonne and Adriana. Yvonne is Terrance's girlfriend and Adriana is her daughter. They need to get married before they can be baptized but right now they are on date for the 11th of February which is before the next transfer so I will still be here if they get baptized on that date. Yvonne's dad died on Saturday night so she didn't make it to church yesterday... That was a
tough one. We visited her after church though, in the snow. Bishop ended church an hour early because of the snow. He probably could have ended it after sacrament but he waited until after sunday school. Then
we visited Terrance and Yvonne. She is hesitant about getting married right now because her first marriage was unsuccessful to say the least and her family is against her marrying someone who isn't hispanic like her... She is thinking about it and is going to pray about it and we will still plan on the 11th of February... So we have to work on the Law of Chastity and The Word of Wisdom (she drinks coffee), and we still have to introduce Tithing... This will be a tough one. They will make it someday though.

I was telling dad that I will probably leave Yakima on the 22nd of February. President probably wont keep me here. just a heads up.

Ummm.... what else... Elder Dutson and I had a really good companionship inventory the other day. We had Zone Conference on Thursday and President advised us to actually tell your companion if they are bugging you and why. And he gave us suggestions to do it more effectively. It was good. We have always gotten along. But now its even better. Good practice for later I suppose.

What else...We have spent a lot of time inside this week because of the snow. Exchanges have been cancelled on some nights because of the slick roads. We are being careful.

Angel didn't come to church. She had a seizure on Friday that dislocated her hip so she was recovering from that. So we are going to see her tonight.

The Hansens came to church on Sunday. We were thinking that we would have more people at church but Larry King forgot. Marissa got lost. and Yvonne and Adriana weren't able to come because of Yvonne's dad dying. But the Hansens were there! that was good. We watched the Glenn Beck conversion story with them the other day. That was fun.

Giants and Patriots in the super bowl. That is all I know. I asked Giovanni about the NBA but he doesn't know enough! I have no clue whats going on... Help me.

Late

The reason I am emailing today is because the holiday yesterday threw everything off. Yesterday just happened to be the day that the LDS Unemployment office was cleaning their carpets and that is where we usually email. so we went to the library but all libraries were closed because of the holiday... So they just told us to email today. I'm sorry. I promise I didn't forget you.

This week was slow. Elder Dutson got sick so we were in all weekend. Friday, Saturday, and Sunday were resting days. We didn't really get out which was fine because its kinda cold. It finally snowed again and its supposed to snow a lot more tomorrow. They say 6 inches.

I hear Israel and the US might go to war? Is that true? I don't know who I will cheer for ;). Kidding. Not funny.

So on Tuesday last week we got a text from the AP's and it was a referral. Which is weird because the AP's live in Pasco so we didn't know why they would ever send us a referral. We went to the address they gave to us later that day and met Angel. She told us that she has a lot of health issues and a lot of family issues in the past as well. She has hit a low point in her life and she recognizes it. She decided that she wanted to get a hold of the Mormons. She has grandparents who are LDS and she loved going to church with them as a child. So she found the Mission Office in the phone book and gave them a call and then we went over there that day. Miracle. Anyway, she has a rough life. We are now teaching her and trying to get her and her daughter and neighbors back into the church.

We met with the Hansen's a couple times in the past week. We have been talking very openly about baptism. He feels that he is not ready to commit himself to something he doesn't know enough about. He doesn't know if the BoM is true and he doesn't know if any of it is necessary for his life. But he still hasn't prayed. We want him to pray. I don't know why it's so hard... If you really wanna know then why don't you ask?? Well... I guess it's faith. He needs more faith. And we have been working with him on his faith. We read Alma 32 with him. We could read Hebrews 11 or Ether 12 too I guess. Those are good chapters. I should have told him to read those... Oh well, next time. He and Dawn will read. Dawn prays. But he doesn't. Also, Dawn isn't quite sure why she needs to be baptized. She was baptized when she was seven and she isn't quite sure why she would need to be baptized again. We have tried to answer that question for her but I'm not so sure she quite accepts it. We will see them again on Saturday and hopefully they will come to church on Sunday. They would come every week if it weren't for work. Dawn works at Michael's and usually works on Sundays...

Terrance and his family are doing very well. Evonne asked someone in our ward if she could be baptized. She needs to ask us that! Terrance and Evonne aren't married so that is an obstacle. They would need to get married before they could get baptized. Either that or they would have to live in separate homes. But Evonne and her kids want to be apart of the church. Terrance is already a member but he is on his way back to becoming active again. They have an awesome family. We are always excited to see them. They will be baptized soon... I might be gone before that happens though... That would be too bad.

That's that. I did a lot of studying over the weekend because of all the free time we had. Elder Dutson slept a lot and tried to get better. He was well enough to go to church and then on p-day he was pretty much back to 100%. Of course! ;). Just kidding. He was really sick. But that afforded me with time to read the Book of Mormon. So that's what I did. It's a pretty good book. You all should read it sometime.

Happy birthday Ciera and Zack. 12, 21. Palindrome. You guys are both old. Its funny to think that Zack will be passing the sacrament. He will be the best one up there. I know it. I just cant wait until Tanner will pass. That will be a hoot. ha. Ciera... You better live up what little life you have left. You are old. Have a baby. Give mom some grandkids. I can't give her those. She would be happy if you did and very sad if I did... But then again she would get to see me sooner... I'll wait. Your turn :).

Love you Mom
Love you Dad

Transfers

You can continue sending mail to:

305 N 28th Avenue
Yakima, WA 98902

I'm staying!

I'm excited. I didn't want to go. I told president that before I left and he decided to let me stay with Elder Dutson and Betty. I mostly didn't want to leave the people we are teaching! We are so close with a lot of them. There are about 4 investigators that are right on the edge of baptism! We are so close! Terrance Sherwinka and his girlfriend are living together and their family. He is a less-active member and is now getting back into church. The rest are non members. So we are working with them. They came to church on Sunday and loved it! Fast Sunday was great.

The Hansens didn't come to church because she had to work. But she was very bummed. She wanted to come. So did he. Mark is a little more hesitant than Dawn is but they are both going somewhere.

But! I cured cancer this week! well I didn't. but the lord did through me. Two weeks ago we got a call from Jonothan Isom in our ward telling us that he has a friend with cancer in his brain and lungs and he wanted a priesthood blessing. So we went over. He told us that he has been dealing with this brain tumor for a long time and he was going through chemotherapy and wasn't seeing many good results. So I blessed him. Then on Friday we got a call from Jonothan telling us the cancer in his brain was GONE! not going away. gone. He still has issues with his lungs but he is also still smoking. So we are going to see him later and bless him for his lungs. He is a non-member so we are seeing great things. We hope to be able to teach him. He is probably in his 70's so he is kinda set in his ways but that blessing was awesome... The priesthood works. His name is Mike and we are going to see him again soon. once he feels better.

Also,
Other things are happening. Jonothan Isom is a Less-active in our ward. He is just coming back to church. He was married and his wife was way anti but he just got a divorce and now he has decided to come back and he is giving us all sorts of referrals. such as mike! he is kinda handicapped in some way. he speaks slowly. But he served a mission. He left early. he only lasted 6 months. so Elder Dutson and I both had the idea to talk to Sister Wilson and have her make an "Elder Isom" tag for him. I'm also going to give him a tie! Life is just awesome. IM STAYING IN YAKIMA!!!

Its supposed to be cold coming up soon. It has been really warm this winter so far. in the 40's and sometimes even the 50's. ridiculously warm for this time of year. but its going to catch up with us soon.

I cant write more because I have no time!
Love you mommy and dad
Love you all.

Investigators

This week was a good one. We wrapped up Christmas stuff and now we are back to the work. Tomorrow we are going to call a lot of people who have been busy with the holidays. They all said to call after new years so tomorrow is the day!

We got 4 more new investigators this week! That is 14 this transfer I think. We are meeting a lot of people. A lot of our current investigators were busy this week with the holidays. That provided us with a lot of time to knock doors and find. We used that time well and we have found many potential investigators.

We have been going through our records as well and we have come back into contact with a few former investigators. Things are looking very promising. We are in the beginning stages of a lot of these situations but I am excited to see where it goes.

Lupe is one of those new investigators this week. We knocked on her door on Tuesday this past week and she said we could come back Thursday. We did and she tried to turn us away. She said she was Catholic and had been her whole life and wasn't interested. Elder Dutson talked our way in though and we taught a lesson to her and her 11 year old son. She isn't terribly promising... Oh well. She said she would read but I doubt she will. Who knows.

The other 2 investigators we got this week were Heidi and Vivianna. They are former investigators. They have been taught for a couple years now but we just got back into contact with them. Her mom is a convert of about 12 years and she promised her mom she would attend church this week. So she did. And we are going to try and go see her later tonight. She has family that is LDS and she is way nice. I could see her being baptized, she just needs to open her mind to it and make time for us to come over and talk to her. She came to church once and she should come again next week. That's more than we usually get

We taught Josiah again this week. We taught him the plan of salvation and he loved it! He is talking more and more about the possibility of "becoming Mormon". People are giving him a hard time about it all. They wonder why he is meeting with Mormon missionaries, but that just makes him more interested. He wonders why people trash on a church that they know nothing about. We answer all these questions he has and loves it. We told him about the 3 degrees of glory and showed him 1 Cor 15:40-41 and he got way excited and wrote it all down so he could go home and show his wife. He was amazed that the words Celestial and Terrestrial were in the bible. He was way excited. He loves meeting with us and he asks so many questions. He is the best investigator ever. The lessons with him are the greatest. Its just taking awhile because he can only meet with us once every other week. We need to meet with him more. And put him on date!

The Hansen's were having some family issues this week so we weren't able to see them. Mark's daughters were being stupid or something. I dunno. But they didn't come to church. We will see them soon.

Ummmm... That is all.

If you ever get the chance, read Douglas L. Callister's talk "Your Refined Heavenly Home". That talk is mind-blowing. It changed my life! Good talk. Live it. Love it.

I got hugged by a drunk guy who told us he was Jesus Christ. He asked us what we were doing. We told him we were around talking about Jesus and he said "WELL YOU"RE LOOKING AT HIM!" yeah.... False prophet. then he gave me a hug and slobbered all over me. That was sweet. I think I'm in love.

Transfers are next week. We get the call this Saturday. So everyone send crap to:

Elder Chase Paxman
Washington Kennewick Mission
8656 W Gage Blvd Ste #205
Kennewick, WA 99336

I don't know if I'm leaving but I may. In which case you shouldn't send stuff to Betty's house anymore. I might leave... That's weird. All I know is Yakima. I'll let you know in a week.

Love you all!

Love,
Elder Paxman
